Is listening to a book the same as reading it?
According to a New York Times article, some book clubs consider it cheating to listen to a book instead of reading it. Many years ago, when I was doing my undergraduate thesis, I first ran across the story that Augustine tells about Ambrose:
When [Ambrose] read, his eyes scanned the page and his heart sought [...]
Mired in Lag — 26 July 2006
Lappet was mired in lag tonight. It was impossible to move, and it was impossible to chat. It was a little disappointing because I wanted to show off some new music from Lida Husik, Elizabeth and the Catapult, and Masha Qrella.
By 9:30 everyone had had enough. Even me.

Some things you don’t want to know
I was introduced to the music of Leonard Cohen when I was 16, and it has been one of the few constants in my life since then. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform live. Once in a while I’d wonder what a Leonard Cohen video would look like.
I wish I hadn’t been so [...]
19 July 2007 — Like a Wave
Funny how the crowd comes and goes. Around 9:30 SLT it was just three or four of us. I was the only woman, so I played Where the Boys Are. I thought I was going to call it an early night. Then around 10:30, a whole new wave of West Coasters came in.

12 July 2007: Have I Told You About My New Web Site?
Maybe I made a little bit of pest of myself tonight telling everyone the address of my new web site. Do you know it? It’s http://HillaryMelville.com.
A lovely night. I like it when new people come, because they often remark on what a different place it is and what a nice crowd is there. And it’s [...]
Country Music
A couple of weeks ago Stanley Fish — I know I’m supposed to know who he is, but I don’t, and really, I’m fine with that — wrote about country music in his New York Times blog. Because he is who he is — I know from his blurbio that he’s a professor — he [...]
Soft Opening
The Salon is ready for its soft opening.
There is still so much to do (links from the playlists to various web sites comes to mind), but I’m ready to let people have a look.
Right now you can see all the playlists going back to the first one I have from late August 2006.
Remember: be kind.
5 July 2007
In honor of the holiday, I decided to put Martina McBride’s Independence Day on the play list. The two Tom Jones numbers on the list were for Mr Burns.
I remember waking up to Mia Doi Todd’s 88 Ways one morning. How can you not love a song that has “gravity” and “entropy” in it? Unfortunately [...]
28 June 2007
This is one of the longer sets in a long time: 62 songs.
It started with an AV I met at Persephone’s store who brought over a bunch of her pals. One of them kept putting people in a cage and sending them outside. Very un-Bluff-like behavior.
By the end it was just friends left, of course. [...]
21 June 2007 — Summerday
First day of summer today and a nice group at the Bluffs.
Tonight’s playlist is something of a hodge-podge (but aren’t they all?) and kind of downtempo. I like tha chance to play Ventricle by Ponies in the Surf. It looks like they’re letting their domain name lapse, which is too bad because you used to [...]
